Stationery chosen with British desks, A4 binders and the September school term in mind

Gifts for stationery lovers

Buying for someone whose desk already looks like a shop? Aim for an experience, a refill or a craft they haven't tried yet.

How to choose

Stationery fans tend to have strong opinions, so a little detective work pays off. Do they write with a fountain pen or gel pens? Do they use dot grid, lined or plain? Are they a planner person, a letter writer or a sketcher? A quick look at their desk, or a subtle question, will steer you away from duplicates.

Gift ideas by personality

The letter writer

A writing paper set, a book of stamps and a wax seal kit turn an ordinary letter into an occasion.

The journaller

A refillable leather or leather-look cover with inserts, a pack of washi tape or a set of brush pens.

The curious beginner

A beginner calligraphy set or a first fountain pen with a couple of bottled inks to try.

The student

An academic diary for the new school or university year and a pen they'll actually enjoy using in lectures.

Safe bets for anyone

  • Bottled ink in a colour they don't own (if they use fountain pens)
  • A notebook in a size they use, with better paper than usual
  • Thank-you cards or notecards
  • A good desk pen pot or tray
  • A gift receipt, just in case

Timing

Christmas is the big one, but stationery also makes a thoughtful end-of-term gift for teachers in July, a leaving present for a colleague, or a "good luck with the exams" nudge in May. Academic diaries go on sale over the summer, and Christmas stationery tends to appear from autumn onwards.
