Desk accessories

A tidy desk isn't about minimalism. It's about being able to reach the pen you want without a search party.

Plan by zones

Think of your desk in three zones. The writing zone directly in front of you should stay clear, perhaps with a desk mat to soften the surface for handwriting. The reach zone either side holds what you use every day: a pen pot, sticky notes, a stapler. The storage zone at the back or on a shelf takes letter trays, files and anything you use weekly rather than hourly.

Materials and style

Wood and bamboo organisers feel warm and suit home studies. Metal mesh is sturdy and inexpensive. Acrylic lets you see what's inside. Felt and leather-look desk mats protect the surface and give a smooth, slightly cushioned surface for writing with a fountain pen.

Measure before you buy: a desk organiser that looks compact online can swallow a small bedroom desk. For A4 letter trays, check that the internal width takes A4 comfortably, and whether trays stack or sit side by side.

Small-desk wins

  • Go vertical: stackable trays and tiered organisers
  • One pen pot, edited ruthlessly (do you need twelve blue biros?)
  • A desk mat to define the writing space
  • Cable tidies and a small drawer unit for chargers
  • A notepad or sticky notes within arm's reach

Pair with a filing system

Letter trays are for paper in motion; they're not a long-term home. Once something has been dealt with, move it into a ring binder or lever arch file. Our filing & organisation drawer explains the difference, and office essentials covers staplers, punches and paper.
